Da Voar Draw - Day 14

Today is the 14th and final day of Da Voar Draw! Thank you so much to everyone who’s drawn along, it’s been lovely to see your varied, inspired and always creative responses! To those who signed up for a materials pack, I hope you’ve enjoyed using these to make art. And to all who have taken part, whether drawing at home or simply following posts, I hope these activities have given some new ideas to consider nature through drawing - and have introduced to you other folk passionate about drawing in the Aberdeen, Orkney and Shetland area - and beyond!

For our very last day, we’re going to further consider how we are entangled with nature. For many, ‘Da Voar’ will perhaps first bring to mind ‘Da Voar Redd Up’, an annual litter-picking initiative that brings folk together to clean Shetland’s beaches and verges, after the worst of the winter storms have passed. It’s a time for a good spring clean! Whilst being very rewarding, it’s of course very sad to see so much litter in the environment, and mainly plastic pollution. Of course, we all realise we have to reduce plastic waste, but it’s very real and sobering to see bottles, wrappers and packets semi-buried in banks, wrapped around fencing, or woven in with seaweed on the shore. If you take a walk in your local environment today, look out for some aspects of human impact in nature to make drawings from.

As we introduced yesterday, the divide we imagine between nature’s processes and the human rational world is a very insubstantial one. Our actions can also sometimes support and encourage nature however, not just harm it. Also look out today for examples of positive relationships with nature – for instance (in the last image here) a croft house left to ruin gave a sheltered place for a bird’s nest – a sure sign of spring!
