A closer look at 'Immersion'

‘July’

2024, pencil crayon, 297 x 210 (unframed), 453 x 364mm (framed)

Over the next few days, I’m giving an introduction to some of the works that feature in ‘Immersion’, showing at the Old Haa Museum, Yell, Shetland, until 22nd September.

In July this year, I was given the very kind gift of a radiant bunch of flowers. They were grown in a beautiful secluded garden on the east side of Bressay. I was amazed by the delicacy of the flowers, flourishing despite the tricky Shetland conditions, and the range of rich colours. Day after day over more than a week, drawing the flowers was a way of becoming immersed in this miniature world and in a more fluid way of working, allowing the work to gradually unfold.
