Lookout! - Drawing sessions at Mareel

Explore stories from Shetland’s lighthouses through creative drawing!

With Bressay lighthouse as our starting theme, we’ll begin by exploring different viewpoints and spaces in our drawings to see how pictures take us on journeys. We’ll use sound, photographs and film to learn more about the history of people who lived and worked at lighthouses, retracing their experiences through imaginative drawing activities. To connect stories from the past with the present, we’ll then develop our ideas, bringing layers of memory and history into our pictures.

Each workshop is a standalone event, but participants are encouraged to attend more than one session to develop their ideas.

Week 1: Viewpoints - Creative ways of using viewpoint and explore sense of journey in drawing.

Week 2: Sounds and Stories - Using imagination, drawing and collage to explore sounds, textures and stories from the past.

Week 3: Develop ‘story-scapes’ in various forms bringing together stories and layered history with landscape.

Recommended age of participants is 8-12.

Please bring a drink and a snack for the break if you wish!

Participation is free, and all materials are provided. Booking through the Shetland Arts website is essential as spaces are limited.
