Storm damage at Skaw Radar Station

Shetland War Ruins Project

In this photograph, another archive image from the radar station, a storm has ripped away a panel from the dome. Glimpsed through the gap left is Muckle Flugga, the most northerly land in Britain - the very last rocky outcrop before the Arctic Circle. Forces of destructive weather have here destroyed part of the geometrical construction, revealing a view out to a wild and barren nature, a constant and all-powerful presence - however much we try to shut it out, to try and create order through futuristic buildings and technology. Looking at this we are reminded of being on the edge, on the very last piece of land, and surrounded by vast and un-knowable forces of ruination.
