Da Voar Draw - Day 9
For Day 9 of Da Voar Draw, we’re going to look at ‘Energy Stores’ in plants!
During adverse conditions such as lack of heat or light, some plants die back for part of the year, storing their energy and water in specially adapted parts (usually underground where they’re better protected). When we think of spring plants, it is perhaps bulbs that first come to mind, their bursts of early colour signalling warmer days around the corner. It’s fascinating to think of these ‘life support’ systems resting just underground, ready to give energy for regrowth when the season changes.
These energy stores come in many forms, for example taproots, tubers, corms, rhizomes and bulbs. Spring-flowering bulbs will be busy growing just now, but you can raid your kitchen for other interesting examples! For instance, I’ve drawn here onion, garlic, beetroot and a fennel ‘bulb’ (strictly speaking a leaf base).
See what you can find to draw from today, as we’re using these interesting plant forms to investigate shape and volume. And as always, simply use #DaVoarDraw, or post in the event page or comments below each post on Facebook to share!
