Da Voar Draw - Day 8

Today is Day 8 of Da Voar Draw, and it’s hard to believe we’re over half-way through this series of daily creative activities taking a fresh look at nature through drawing! Thank you very much to all those who’ve participated so far – it’s been lovely seeing the varied and interesting responses! I hope the activities have set imaginations going, and also hopefully given an opportunity to hear about other creatives working in the Aberdeen, Orkney and Shetland area – and beyond!

Today we’re going to work with Driftwood (or any deadwood that you can find near you). Here in Shetland, winter storms bring huge amounts of driftwood up onto the shorelines, and in spring all kinds of gnarled and twisted wooden forms can be found. It’s amazing to think of the huge distances these could have travelled, carried around the planet by ocean gyres. Looking closely, you can of course still see the wood’s unique pattern of tree rings – a record of its life on earth, spring following spring in layered strata as growth quickens then slows again each year.

If you wish to share your work in response to Driftwood, simply use #DaVoarDraw, or post in the event page or comments below each post on Facebook!
