Da Voar Draw - Day 7

Today’s Da Voar Draw activities will be taking inspiration from Shadows!

As spring progresses, days grow longer and brighter. Here in Shetland, because of our latitude at 60degrees north, the difference between daylight hours in winter and summer is quite extreme. This means that the transition during spring is fast – in only a few days it seems sometimes, the sun’s path is notably different, qualities of light change, and shadows change too of course.

So far, we’ve been exploring the lines and shapes of solid objects, drawing with lines that delineate physical contours and edges. Today however, we’re taking inspiration from ‘In Praise of Shadows’, an evocative essay by Japanese writer Junichiro Tanizaki: “We find beauty not in the thing itself but in the patterns of shadows, the light and the darkness, that one thing against another creates...”. When drawing shadows, we are not drawing an object, but capturing the effects of contrasting tones, ephemeral and in constant flux. These tonal shapes are of course however a very important part of our visual world.

In these examples, I’ve drawing the shadows created from a budding tree. You can take inspiration from any natural form that creates interesting shadows today!

Share your work using #DaVoarDraw, or post in the event page or comments below each post on Facebook. It would be lovely to see your creativity and start conversations!
