Da Voar Draw - Day 11

For Day 11 of Da Voar Draw, we are focusing on Trees!

We have looked at trees and wood in a few different ways already during Da Voar Draw – the shapes of buds, the shadows that branches create, and the weathered textures of driftwood. We have moved from line, to shape, to volume (heightened by tone). But today’s activities are about further exploring depth in drawing through line quality.

We have also looked at line quality before in Da Voar Draw! Today however, we’re going to experiment with more understanding of how varying our marks can add to a feeling of receding space in a picture.

Trees are endlessly fascinating 3D forms. Their spring leaves are perhaps the most visible sign of the changing season, their elegant skeletal branches taking on a completely different meaning once covered in fluttering leaves. It’s also fascinating thinking of the hidden underground root structure, stretching out at least as far as the crown - a subterranean mirror-form. For your subject today, try and find a tree that you can sit under, and look up at the layered branches and twigs. Have a homemade viewfinder ready too, just simply formed with 4 strips of card and a paperclip!

It’s lovely to see your responses! Feel free to share using #DaVoarDraw, or post in the event page or comments below each post on Facebook!
