Da Voar Draw - Day 12

Today’s theme for Da Voar Draw is Water!

Over the last few days, we’ve been exploring volume, tone and line quality – basically how to increase a sense of ‘realness’, solidity and depth in our work. Today in our experiments with drawing water, we’re still working with these ideas – but in much more free-flowing and experimental ways!

Water is of course everywhere in the natural world. As seasons change, water in the atmosphere and in the oceans is heated and cooled, driving our weather. (Here in Shetland, we know this very well, as mist from the sea can suddenly gather after warmer days!) Water's restlessness, constantly changing between solid, liquid and gas, creates amazing and ephemeral visual effects in the landscape. It creates but also destroys, depositing sediment but also gradually eroding cliffs and carving its way through rock and land.

Here in Shetland, I’ve taken inspiration mostly from the sea, but if you live inland you can work from perhaps a lake or river. But you can even simply observe the effects in a simple glass of water today!

You can, as always, share your work if you wish using #DaVoarDraw, or post in the event page or comments below each post on Facebook!
