Da Voar Draw - Day 4

Today for Day 4 of Da Voar Draw, and we are taking a focused look at Leaves!

Over the last few days, activities have hopefully got our lines flowing nicely across the page with confidence and have also led us to start looking much more closely at forms in nature. We’re now going to move from line to shape, the next ‘fundamental’ in drawing.

We can think of a shape as ‘a space enclosed by line’. When making line drawings, we create impressions on the page of real forms and objects by tracing their outer edges and bold lines. Accurately plotting qualities such as line directions, gradients, angles and curvature will therefore accurately define shape.

Leaves have hugely varied shapes; delicate, bold, rounded, heart-shaped, spikey – the list is endless! But as they emerge again in spring, it’s fascinating to consider that such beautiful variation is all because of each plant’s different life processes, a perfect balance of form and function.

Look around for the leaves in your local environment today if you have chance to spend some time in nature!

It’s amazing to see your creative responses - don’t forget to share your work using #DaVoarDraw, or post in the event page on Facebook.
