Da Voar Draw - Day 5

It’s already Day 5 of Da Voar Draw, and today we are taking inspiration from Buds!

Seeing trees suddenly burst into leaf is perhaps one of the first things we think of when we consider the spring. But have we ever really looked at buds in detail before? With tiny leaves all folded up inside, ready to burst open in the spring sunshine, they are miraculous forms. Each species also has its own distinctive bud, yet another example of nature’s amazing variation of design.

To further practise drawing shape, today’s activity will explore interesting visual interactions between lines of branches and the shapes of buds and newly emerging leaves.

Here in Shetland, leaves emerge quite late! Try and find buds on trees and shrubs during a walk today if you can, or take inspiration from these photos.
